Bennett - The list of words in Latin that have a long vowel before two consonants

Download this episode (39 min)

This boring but important audio file, is a reading of Bennett's list of the most important words that have a long hidden vowel before two consonants. These are usually unmarked in the dictionary.

I have a headache today, a mild one to be sure, and I almost gave up reading this lot out. I am sure one or two of you enthusiasts might find it useful, despite its total and utter lack of entertainment value.

Please note:
1. derivatives and compounds are not in this list
2. words with ns and nf are not in the list, as the vowel in front of ns and nf is almost always long.
3. the verbs ending in asco, esco, isco
4. Some Greek loan words
5. Nouns and adjectives in x, where the genitive case shows that the preceeding vowel is a long vowel.
